Before going into self hypnosis, first a word on hypnosis. The word “hypnosis” will usually conjure up images of people clucking like chickens and generally making a fool of themselves or simply being mind controlled by some villain, as in a Hollywood movie. Self hypnosis is basically like guided meditation with visualizations and affirmations. In meditation the goal is to relax your mind by focusing on your breath or the emptim=ness between thoughts. In that way meditation is a passive exercise. By comparison self hypnosis is an active exercise. You need to relax your mind and body, as in meditation, then all you have to do is visualize the change you want to make and create a positive affirmation for your mind to focus on. It's that simple. 

The simplest self hypnosis technique would be to relax your mind and body by breathing slowly and deeply, while holding in your mind the image of a pleasant place, like your favorite park, garden or vacation spot. Then you can add a visualization. For example if you have a stressful experience you can visualize yourself handling the situation differently. Visualize yourself doing the same activity but being less stressfully. Add details to your visualization. Feel good about the change you're making and keep a positive mental attitude about making the change and you will. 

You can use self hypnosis for anything and everything from weight loss to motivation. People using self hypnosis for weight loss will visualize themselves losing weight, being careful with their diet, eating less and exercising more. All with the goal of losing weight and feeling good about losing the weight and feeling good about doing what needs to be done to lose weight. For motivation you can simply see yourself accomplishing your goal and being done with it and feeling good about being done with it. And so on.

A hypnotist will use the same method of affirmations, visualizations and suggestions with the main difference being that hypnosis is a directed experience. That means the hypnotist acts like a guide for change. In self hypnosis you yourself are your guide.
